Description
- Windows 11 laptop can not connect to the BOWDOIN or eduroam Wi-Fi networks
Environment
Recently updated Windows 11 computer.
Solution
If a Windows 11 computer can not connect to the BOWDOIN or eduroam Wi-Fi networks after an update, forgetting the saved wi-fi network and reconnecting may resolve the issue.
- Open Settings (press Windows + i) or click on the Windows menu icon and browse to the Settings app.
- Navigate to Network & Internet and click Wi-Fi then click "Manage Known Networks"
- In the "Manage Known Networks" menu, locate the BOWDOIN or eduroam wi-fi network and click the "Forget" button besides it.
- Navigate to Network & Internet and click Wi-Fi and turn the Wi-Fi slider off and then back on.
- Click "Show available networks", select BOWDOIN or eduroam and click the "Connect" button besides it.
- Click "Connect" to Continue connecting and then authenticate with your Bowdoin email address and password and press "Ok" to connect.
The reason this issue happens is that Windows 10 uses a security protocol of TLS 1.2 to encrypt wireless authentication data, however Windows 11 uses a more secure protocol of TLS 1.3. Unfortunately, there is no automated way to transition from one to the other without deleting the old network settings and re-connecting with the new settings.
